Why would you need to x-fer files from two different editors. Shouldn't one editor be sufficient?

Does this require you to be transferring timelines between programs that exist on the same Mac? If not what is the optimum file format to work in?

Do you have to load a plug-in onto the computer running Avid? I'm on the Final Cut end and need to tell the Avid editor what I want. I'm hoping it's just me that needs the plugin - doesn't Avid normally export aafs? I hope so.
